I was surprised this week’s Thursday Movie Picks for me ended up being about romance again, because all my picks are from romantic movies. Maybe because they are the only non-musical movies that somehow work with random musical scenes? I don’t know, but all these scenes popped into my head, and the movies they are from are pretty good too!

1. MY BEST FRIEND’S WEDDING (1997)

This is a pretty bitter sweet movie, and it’s one of my favourites from Julia Roberts. The scene that came to mind though, was all about Rupert Everett, who busts out a I say a little prayer in the middle of nowhere. But it works, and if that’s not enough, Cameron Diaz is a trooper of a woman, who constantly embarrasses herself, including singing so badly in this movie that it’s actually cute.

2. 500 DAYS OF SUMMER (2009)

Guys, this movie is almost 10 years old!? That just messed me up a little, because I still remember when it came out and my Joseph Gordon-Levitt fangirling was at its peak! Plus, this was actually the first scene I thought about, even though it’s not my favourite on the list. This musical parody dance scene to Hall & Oat’s You Make My Dreams works so well in 500 Days of Summer, that without it, this movie would not be as precious!

3. 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU (1999)

Almost started to cry when I watched this scene of Heath Ledger singing Can’t Take My Eyes of Off You.. it’s my favourite song moment in any movie, including musicals! It works, it is romantic, and it’s especially amazing because up until that moment, you think Patrick would never serenade Kat. Then he sings that, and you think to yourself, why doesn’t Patrick sing all his lines, because him singing, smiling with such joy, it’s all just so perfect.

  1. Those are such lovely picks! You are absolutely right that it didn’t bother me either that they broke into song in those movies, because usually I really don’t like it when that happens haha

    1. I know right, like those scenes were meant to be, even though they sort of stood out! 🙂

  2. Great picks! I’ve always loved that scene in 10 Things I Hate About You. It’s hard not to swoon when it’s Heath Ledger serenading.

    1. I think it’s mandatory to swoon for that scene. 🙂

  3. All great choices…I’m not sure if I could choose a favorite from that bunch. They’re all so perfect ❤

    1. That’s great, I’m glad you agree! 🙂

  4. We match on 500 Days and 10 Things! Great movies.

    1. 2 out 3 matches is pretty amazing, some day will get all three! 😀

Thank you for linking the scene from My Best Friend’s Wedding. I didn’t remember about it but now I do. I picked (500) Days of Summer too.

    1. How can you forget Diaz singing that song.. I think I cringe watched it and I still have a hard time forgetting it!

  6. We match on two movies, woo! The ones I figured we would: 10 Things I Hate About You and 500 Days of Summer😍 I felt like crying rewatching Ledger’s scene too, before posting. It was so perfect.

I’ve seen My Best Friend’s Wedding but I honestly can’t remember that scene… I know I liked the movie though, so maybe it’s time for a rewatch!

    1. I thought we would match, the two picks we match on are so obvious. But I’m glad we got one that was different, but I did see someone mention My Best Friend’s Wedding, so all my picks are known and loved! 😀

  7. Everyone is going for the same picks but that’s not a bad thing. Who can go wrong with these picks?

    1. I think this is the theme we agree the most on, because everyone is picking the same things, and I’m not disappointed! These are great picks and you’re right, you can’t go wrong with any of them! 🙂

  8. 500 Days and 10 Things are very popular today. I didn’t love the first though JGL was very good but 10 Things is a great deal of fun and Heath’s song terrific. We match on your first! A great fun flick and that scene with a gem. Oh the Susan Hayward of it all!!

This was much tougher than last week to come up with picks but after nosing around a bit I came up with these three.

Adventures in Babysitting (1987)-When Chris Parker (a phenomenal Elisabeth Shue) agrees to babysit the Anderson kids after her date cancels at the last minute she has no idea that she is embarking on the rollercoaster ride of her life thanks to her friend Brenda (a hilarious Penelope Ann Miller) being stuck at the bus station in the city. Going to help against her better judgement she and the kids have one harrowing madcap adventure after another including an unexpected but spirited impromptu performance in a jazz club. Disarming and just plain fun.

The First Wives Club (1996)- At the funeral of one of their college roommates who committed suicide when her ex-husband married a younger woman three women (Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, and Diane Keaton) reunite for the first time in nearly 30 years. When they realize the reason for their friend’s suicide, they discover a common bond-all of their ex-husbands have taken them for granted as well-they decide it’s time for revenge and unite to get back at their exes. Scheming and chicanery topped by a musical number follow.

My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)-Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) panics when her best friend Michael (Dermot Mulroney) calls out of the blue and tells her he is getting married the next weekend to pert, ultra-wealthy Kimmy (Cameron Diaz). Once upon a time Julianne and Michael had made a pact to marry each other if they hadn’t found someone by their 28th birthday, with this news she decides Michael is the man for her and sets out to stop the wedding against the advice of her other best friend George (a scene stealing Rupert Everett). Hilarity and an unexpected musical number ensue. Disarming romantic comedy with Roberts’s superstar charisma totally responsible for making her rather contemptible character someone you almost root for.

    1. Woo, is this our first match? Probably not, I think we have had at least one or two before, but it’s a rarity and I’m happy for it! Plus, not many remember that scene so I feel a lot more special for it! 😀

  9. (500) Days of Summer is everywhere today, and with good reason. It’s a great scene. Sadly, it’s the only one of your picks I’ve seen.

    1. Oh wow, I’m surprised you haven’t seen 10 Things I Hate About You!

  10. My Best Friend’s Wedding is funnand is popular today so is 500 Days which now, I want to see. I really liked 10 Things too and Heath was great and could have easily played the lead in La La Land

  11. I love 10 Things I Hate About You and that is a great scene, if I had remembered it definitely would have been in my picks.
