Thursday Movie Picks: Movies Based on a TV Series

Another week, another great topic because there are a lot of big, well known movies, that are actually based on TV series! Two of these I was aware of, the third one I accidentally stumbled on, when I was fact checking as I usually do. I was like, really?, based on a TV series, cool, going on the list because that movie is a good one. Check out my list to find out which movie I’m talking about.

1. THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E, 2015

This was an easy pick, because I just recently put up The Man from U.N.C.L.E. poster and recalled how fun, energetic and enjoyable the movie was. It really made me want to see it again, and it really made me crave for a sequel as well, because I need to see more of my precious Illya! Also, as the title of this week’s topic refers, the movie is based on a TV-series, by the same name, from the 60’s.

2. STAR TREK, 2009

Not going to lie, I have not seen the original series, nor the movies before the franchise was revived by J.J. Abrams, but man, I do love this world. I love the characters, and I love the chemistry between the actors chosen for their roles, and I think I need a few more movies. The first one though, still my favorite, and I’ve seen it so many times that I can’t even remember how many times I have seen it.

3. THE FUGITIVE, 1993

I had no idea, this 90’s crime movie was based on a 60’s TV-series by the same name, but when I saw that, I jumped on the opportunity to mention The Fugitive. Because who wouldn’t love Harrison Ford on the run, looking for his wife’s killer, while Tommy Lee Jones is after him!? The movie is a great example how great 90’s movies were, and still are if you give them a chance.

I haven’t seen The Man From U.N.C.L.E. or The Fugitive, but I grew up watching Star Trek with my dad everyday! We used to watch both the Original series and the Next Generation! The new revival films are amazing though! I’ll honestly watch anything Star Trek haha! I hope to watch The Fugitive and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. soon! 😀

    1. You need to watch Man From UNCLE right NOW! The Fugitive is great as well, but UNCLE, get to it, and then let me know what you think! 😀

    1. Oh wait until next week, I have literally two movies to recommend, and one of them is not really good. 😀

  2. We have a match…and it was almost two, Man from U.N.C.L.E. was the first I thought of but I was fairly confident that it would show up-actually more than it has-so I left it but I loved the film and would also like to see a sequel. How timely a pick too what with the passing of Robert Vaughn, the original Napoleon Solo over the weekend. The original series was very clever and VERY 60’s which the movie was able to capture.

I’m not a Trekkie but I’m sure I’ve seen all the original series episodes, they were rerun all the time when I was a kid and pretty unavoidable and liked them but never watched any of the subsequent versions. The recent spate of films have been very good and I’d recommend SOME of the earlier ones, somehow every other one of those turned out well so the second, fourth and sixth are worth watching while the 1, 3 and 5 are terrible.

We match with The Fugitive a terrific reworking of the original show, which is worth checking out if you haven’t seen it. David Janssen is terrific in the lead while he pursues the one armed man and pretty much every episode is dotted with familiar faces.

This week was a snap since there were so many shows/movies to pick from. Here’s my three.

Serenity (2005)-Continuing the story of Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his crew who are roaming the galaxy in their beat up spaceship Serenity from the short lived show Firefly. With a brother and sister who are being pursued by a hired killer, the ruthless Operative (Chiwetel Ejiofor) the group planet hop from place to place in their somewhat unreliable rust bucket. By turns light-hearted and tense.

The Fugitive (1993)-Dr. Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) is attacked in a home invasion and his wife murdered by a one armed man. Falsely accused of the crime he escapes after a spectacular train wreck and sets out to find the person responsible all the while pursued by the dogged efforts of Deputy Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones). Fasted paced and entertaining, TLJ won a best supporting Oscar for his work. Updated and slightly rethought version of the classic David Janssen series with some terrific action set pieces.

Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988)-There’s a plot to turn innocent people into assassins and through them kill prominent people including Queen Elizabeth II but the police are on it. The problem however is that the case has been assigned to Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) an utterly clueless detective who specialty is bumbling. Silly comedy turned formerly stern leading man Nielsen into a comedy mainstay. Based on the comic TV series Police Squad.

    1. Wow, a match!!, that took like, what, months!? But I mean, this topic really suited for me. My flatmate has been at me for not watching Firefly and I will someday, and then I will be ready to watch Serenity as well!

And I thought about Naked Gun as well, since I did check my facts and then googled movies based on TV shows as well, but it has been AGES since I saw that movie and I didn’t want to pick it because I don’t really remember it. I vaguely do I think though, because I’m sure if I start watching it, it will all rush back to me.

  3. I haven’t seen the Star Trek series either (just a few episodes) but I’ve seen the entire movie series and J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek is easily one of the best entries.

  4. Awesome call with The Fugitive! Did you see ‘in the Loop’? That would be my main pick!

    1. I have not seen it, but I have been meaning to, just haven’t had the chance.

  5. OK…you have not seen the original series??? I hang my head low…:) I have watched all of them. Love The Man From UNCLE and I believe it was well done and want a sequel. The Fugitive was a huge hit!! I am talking about the TV Series. Back in the day, most TV shows would not tie things up at the end…the shows just ended. When David Janssen finally caught the one armed man, it was the most watched show ever until MASH. Every one satyed home to watch the series finale including my parents!

    1. Well all those series were lost to be in my childhood since they were not shown in my country at all I think.. so I was not aware of them growing up, then saw the movies, and now feel a little weird going back to the series that inspired the movies.

  6. These three are both very popular today. I love the new Star Trek movies.

  7. Wow. You’ve never seen the original Star Trek series, at all? I didn’t think someone like you existed, lol. The ’09 movie was loads of fun. I need to see the latest installment. The Man from UNCLE was solid, but I wasn’t craving another one. The Fugitive is fantastic. Glad someone mentioned it.

    1. Well, honestly, there might have been a channel here in Estonia that showed it but Star Trek series was never a big thing when I was growing up. And The Fugitive was a surprise but once I saw it was inspired by a series, I had to mention it!

  8. Cool picks! The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was so awesome. That’s a movie you can put on repeat and never get tired of. 😛 I wish it did well enough with critics to get a sequel.

    1. Critics are stupid if they thought the movie was bad. Like, so stupid. And I’ll never loose hope for a sequel.

  9. Excellent picks! And I completely agree about Illya!
Favourite line(s) in the Fugitive ‘I didn’t kill my wife’ ‘I don’t care!’

    1. That movie is a classic thriller. Like, they don’t make thrillers like that anymore.

  10. I didn’t know the Fugitive was based on a 60’s series either. I do know there was a series made in the early 2000s

    1. I don’t recall the later series though I think I might know that one if I look it up. Maybe it rings a bell…. maybe not.
